Breakfast with the Birds

Adults search for eagles, waterfowl, and other birds at Lake Accotink Park from 8 to 11 a.m. Bring binoculars and a field guide. Meet in the train trestle parking lot near the dam. Enjoy refreshments at the visitor center. This is a free community event. To register, call703-569-0285.

Sunset Cruises

Admire the sunset and relax as you cruise Lake Accotink from 7 to 8 p.m. You may spot a heron settling in for the night or a deer coming down to water's edge for a late drink. Staff members share interesting facts about the history of the park, the lake and the surrounding area. Beverages served on board. The cost is $6 per person. Passengers must be at least 18 years old. Green Spring Gardens Curator Brenda Skarphol introduces you to the trees and shrubs suitable for wet, dry, sunny and shady habitats and entices you with their beauty in the garden from 10 a.m. to noon. Summer Stroll

Glittering fireflies, gnawing beavers and a parade of raccoons – evidence that Huntley Meadows Park never sleeps! Learn about Huntley's night life through a short lecture and a walk to the wetland from 8 to 10 p.m. The cost is $6 per person. To register, call 703-768-2525.

Learn some dragonfly identification basics as we count and net dragonflies in a variety of habitats at Riverbend Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. So far, 43 species have been recorded; perhaps we'll find more. Bring a lunch, water, and binoculars. Bring your own net or borrow one of ours. The cost is $5 per person. Participants must be at least seven years old. Learn about animal sounds and take a night-time stroll along the Old Oak Trail at Hidden Oaks Nature Center from 8 to 9 p.m. Practice your new listening and identifying skills.
